Tunisian simple stitch (Tss): the woven grid

Insert the hook under the front vertical bar from right to left, yarn over and pull up a loop; keep every loop on the hook and work them off on the return pass. Tunisian simple stitch makes a firm, woven-looking grid.

What it looks like A firm grid of small vertical and horizontal bars, like woven fabric.
Make the stitch

Forward pass: skip the first vertical bar. Insert the hook from right to left under the next front vertical bar, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat across, then pick up a loop under both strands of the last edge stitch.

Before you start: Tunisian crochet

Make one row

  1. Forward pass: skip the first vertical bar. Insert the hook from right to left under the next front vertical bar, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat across, then pick up a loop under both strands of the last edge stitch.
  2. Return pass: yarn over and pull through 1 loop, then yarn over and pull through 2 loops until 1 loop remains.

Count and check

Count the loops on the hook at the end of the forward pass: it should match your stitch count every row. The fabric shows small squares of vertical and horizontal bars, the same on every row because you never turn.
