How to crochet front loop only: find the right strand

Insert under the strand of the top V closest to you. Leave the farther strand unworked, then finish the stitch normally.

1 loop on the hook

Step 1 Hold the row with the top Vs facing upward. The loop nearest your body is the front loop.

  2. 1 loop on the hook
Step 2 Insert the hook under only that near strand. Do not go between yarn fibers or through the stitch post.
  3. 122 loops on the hook + yarn over
Step 3 Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and draw through both loops to finish a front-loop-only single crochet.
  4. 122 loops on the hook + yarn over
Step 4 Move to the next top V. Work each stitch once. After turning, identify the new near strand again; front does not mean the right side of the fabric.

Make the stitch

Hold the row with the top Vs facing upward. The loop nearest your body is the front loop.

US / UK FLO means front loop only in either terminology systemLoop placement does not change the stitch count.

Before you start: Single crochet

Where the hook goes for front loop only: under the strand of each top V nearer you.
Where the hook goes for front loop only: under the strand of each top V nearer you.

Find the front loop

  1. Hold the row with the top Vs facing upward. The loop nearest your body is the front loop.
  2. Insert the hook under only that near strand. Do not go between yarn fibers or through the stitch post.
  3. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and draw through both loops to finish a front-loop-only single crochet.
  4. Move to the next top V. Work each stitch once. After turning, identify the new near strand again; front does not mean the right side of the fabric.

Practice on a short strip

Chain 11. Work single crochet in the second chain from the hook and each remaining chain: 10 stitches. Chain 1 and turn; the chain does not count. Work 10 front-loop-only single crochets. Repeat that row.

Count 10 top Vs after each row. The unworked loops form a visible line on the other side of the row. Compare it with a row made through both loops. The placement changes the surface, not the number of stitches.

Catch the wrong placement

If one stitch has no unworked back strand, you may have caught both loops there. Undo to that stitch if a consistent ridge matters.

If the stitches seem twisted, check that the hook enters from the same side every time. For a shaped round, use the increase or decrease instruction as well as FLO; one does not replace the other.
