Try it on a practice strip
Chain 12. Double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and in each chain across: 10 stitches, counting the skipped chains as the first stitch. Chain 3 and turn; the chain 3 counts as the first stitch.
Row 2: skip the first stitch, dc2tog over the next 2 stitches, double crochet in each stitch until 3 stitches remain, dc2tog, then double crochet in the top of the turning chain: 8 stitches.
If the decrease looks wrong
The count did not drop: each double crochet was finished before the next began. The last pull-through has to collect one loop from each part-made stitch.
A pattern that says dc3tog works three part-made double crochets, leaving four loops on the hook, then draws through all four. The same idea gives a cluster stitch when the stitches go into one place instead of three.
