Crochet steering wheel cover: a single-crochet strip laced on

Measure around the rim’s grip and along the whole wheel. Make a single-crochet strip as long as the wheel and as wide as the grip, then lace its long edges together around the rim on the inside.

Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

Example counts at 16 stitches and 18 rows per 10 cm, for a wheel about 38 cm across (119 cm around) with an 11 cm grip: chain 188 for 187 stitches (117 cm, 2 cm less than the wheel so it stretches on), and work 18 rows (10 cm, a little less than the grip so it fits snugly). Work out your own from the measurements and your swatch.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Measure and make the strip

  1. Measure around the rim where you hold it (the grip) and the full length around the wheel. Make a swatch and count stitches and rows in 10 cm.
  2. Chain the wheel length less about 2 cm, worked out from your stitches per 10 cm, plus 1: 188 chains in the example. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and across: 187 stitches.
  3. Rows 2–18: chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch. Stop when the strip is about 1 cm narrower than the grip measurement.

Lace it on

  1. Wrap the strip around the rim with the edges meeting on the inside, toward you.
  2. With a long length of yarn and a yarn needle, lace the two long edges together through matching stitches, pulling snug. At each spoke, lace up to it, pass the yarn behind and start again on the other side.
  3. Weave in the ends on the inside.

Check the work

187 stitches in every row in the example. The cover must be tight: if it turns on the wheel, take it off and make it narrower before you drive.

  • If it slips, re-lace it tighter or remove a row.
  • If it bunches at the spokes, leave a slightly wider gap around each one.
