Know these stitches: single crochet
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.
Finished size and gauge
Each panel is 240 ÷ S cm wide and 300 ÷ R cm tall, where S and R are single crochets and rows per 10 cm. Each strap is 60 ÷ S cm wide and 600 ÷ R cm long before attachment. Seams and attached overlap reduce usable dimensions. The box below works out the panels and the straps for the size you want.
The shape of the market tote.
Your tote’s pattern
Example: the tote the steps make, panels 17 cm wide and 19 cm tall with 37.5 cm straps, at 14 single crochets and 16 rows per 10 cm. Type the size you want and your swatch over it.
- Panels: chain 25, then 24 single crochets a row for 30 rows, about 17.1 × 18.8 cm. Make 2.
- Straps: chain 7, then 6 single crochets a row for 60 rows, about 4.3 cm wide and 37.5 cm long. Make 2.
Measure the largest thing the bag must carry and add a few centimeters each way for the seams and room to slip it in. For the straps, measure a bag you like to carry the same way, over the shoulder or in the hand.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternMake the body panels
- Chain 25. Single crochet in the second chain and across: 24 stitches.
- Chain 1 and turn without counting it. Work 24 single crochets. Continue until the panel has 30 rows.
- Make a second matching panel. Wash and dry both by the yarn label and compare their dimensions.
- Place the panels right sides together. Match corners and sew both sides and the bottom through corresponding edge loops. Leave the top open. Turn right side out.
Make and attach the straps
- For each strap, chain 7 and work 6 single crochets from the second chain. Continue for 60 rows, chaining 1 and turning without counting the chain. Make 2 straps.
- Lay one strap’s ends on one panel and the other strap’s ends on the other panel. Match the distance from each side and keep the straps untwisted.
- Overlap the ends onto intact fabric below the opening. Sew around each overlapping end and across it, passing through stable stitches in the strap and panel.
- Weave all tails. Inspect every attachment from both sides and gently check for loose loops before using the bag. Stop using it if a seam or strap begins to open.
Check the work
Panels have equal counts and dimensions. Strap ends sit symmetrically and each sewn attachment catches both layers.
- If the opening twists, inspect strap orientation before resewing.
- If the sides gather, loosen the seam and match row ends one pair at a time.
