Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate for size Medium: the 7,866 half double crochets at about 6 cm of medium yarn each and the 180 single crochets of the hem at about 4 cm come to about 480 m. Buy about 540 m, for example three balls of 180 m.

This pattern has about 8,046 stitches. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 8,046 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.

Finished size and gauge

Sized from the Craft Yarn Council’s women’s chart. The top goes round the hips plus 5 cm, so the skirt pulls on over them, and the elastic draws it in at the waist. The counts below are size Medium (96.5–101.5 cm hips): 99 + 5 = 104 cm, which at 13 half double crochets and 10 rounds per 10 cm is 138 stitches, rounded to a multiple of 6 for the increases. The skirt flares to 180 stitches, about 138 cm round the hem, and is 51 rounds, about 51 cm, long. For your size and swatch, read the stitches from the size table below. The length is yours: add or leave out plain rounds before the hem, keeping an increase round every 6th round. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rounds and to the pattern’s repeat. Check the first rows against your swatch.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Waistband

  1. Chain 138 and join the chain into a ring with a slip stitch in the first chain, taking care not to twist it. Round 1: chain 2 (it does not count), half double crochet in each chain, join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet (138 stitches).
  2. Slip the ring over your hips now: it should pass over them without stretching. If it does not, start again with 6 more chains.
  3. Rounds 2–6: chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch, join (138 stitches). Keep the joins in a line at one side; they mark the side of the skirt.

Skirt

  1. Rounds 7–9: chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch, join (138 stitches).
  2. Round 10: chain 2, [half double crochet in the next 22 stitches, 2 half double crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (144 stitches).
  3. Rounds 11–15: chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch, join (144 stitches).
  4. Round 16: chain 2, [half double crochet in the next 23 stitches, 2 half double crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (150 stitches).
  5. Rounds 17–21: chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch, join (150 stitches).
  6. Round 22: chain 2, [half double crochet in the next 24 stitches, 2 half double crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (156 stitches).
  7. Rounds 23–27: chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch, join (156 stitches).
  8. Round 28: chain 2, [half double crochet in the next 25 stitches, 2 half double crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (162 stitches).
  9. Rounds 29–33: chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch, join (162 stitches).
  10. Round 34: chain 2, [half double crochet in the next 26 stitches, 2 half double crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (168 stitches).
  11. Rounds 35–39: chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch, join (168 stitches).
  12. Round 40: chain 2, [half double crochet in the next 27 stitches, 2 half double crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (174 stitches).
  13. Rounds 41–45: chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch, join (174 stitches).
  14. Round 46: chain 2, [half double crochet in the next 28 stitches, 2 half double crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (180 stitches).
  15. Rounds 47–50: chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch, join (180 stitches).
  16. Round 51, the hem: chain 1, single crochet in each stitch, join (180 stitches). Fasten off.

Elastic

  1. Fold Rounds 1–3 to the inside, so the fold runs between Rounds 3 and 4. With the yarn and a yarn needle, sew the foundation edge loosely to the inside of the skirt, along the line where Round 7 joins Round 6, leaving a gap of about 5 cm.
  2. Pin the safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the casing, holding the other end so it does not slip in. Try the skirt on, pull the elastic to a snug fit, overlap the ends 2.5 cm and sew them firmly together with the needle and thread.
  3. Sew the gap closed, spread the gathers evenly round the waist and weave in the ends.

Check the work

The top has 138 stitches, the hips plus 5 cm. Seven increase rounds, Rounds 10, 16, 22, 28, 34, 40, 46, add 6 each: 138 + 42 = 180 at the hem.

Stitches in each round, waist to hem, after each increase round138 · 144 · 150 · 156 · 162 · 168 · 174 · 180
  • If the ring will not pass over your hips, start again with 6 more chains: the elastic, not the crochet, makes the waist fit.
  • If the hem ripples, the increases come too close together: work them every 8th round instead of every 6th.
  • If the elastic twists in the casing, stitch through the casing and the elastic at each side to hold it flat.
