Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Wool-Ease worsted yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate: the 2,240 double crochets and post stitches of the pair at about 8 cm of medium yarn each come to about 180 m. Post stitches take a little more yarn than plain ones, so buy about 250 m.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

Measure around the widest part of your calf and take off about 2 cm: the post-stitch rib stretches, and a little less than the leg keeps the warmer up. Example: a 36 cm calf gives 34 cm, which at 12 double crochets per 10 cm is about 41 stitches; round it to an even number, 40, because the rib works in pairs. 28 rounds, at about 7 per 10 cm, make each warmer about 40 cm long, from the ankle to below the knee. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Leg warmers: make 2

  1. Chain 40 and join with a slip stitch into the first chain, taking care not to twist the chain. Try it around your ankle and calf: it should pass over the heel and sit snugly on the calf.
  2. Round 1: chain 2 (it does not count), double crochet in each chain around, join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet: 40 stitches.
  3. Rounds 2–28: chain 2 (it does not count), [front post double crochet around the next stitch, back post double crochet around the next stitch] 20 times, join to the first stitch: 40 stitches. Work each front post around a front post and each back post around a back post, so the ribs run straight.
  4. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Make the second warmer with the same number of rounds.

Check the work

Every round has 40 stitches, 20 front and 20 back post double crochets in turn, so the ribs line up from round to round.

  • If the ribs spiral, a round started on the wrong stitch: begin every round with a front post around the first front post below.
  • If the warmers slide down, start again with 4 fewer chains, or thread a length of elastic through the top round.
  • If the foundation chain will not stretch over your heel, make it on a hook 1 mm larger.
