Know these stitches: chain, double crochet
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
Yarn estimate: the 2,779 double crochets at about 5 cm of light yarn each and the 3,605 chains at about 1.5 cm come to about 195 m. Buy about 220 m, for example two balls of 120 m.
For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.
Finished size and gauge
Measure the window: the width inside the frame, or the rod between its brackets, and the drop from the rod to where the curtain should end. At 6 squares and 9 rows per 10 cm, the squares are the width × 0.6, rounded to an even number for the band of blocks: an 80 cm window takes 80 × 0.6 = 48. The rows that show are the drop × 0.9: a 45 cm drop is 40.5, so 40 rows, of which 34 are plain mesh, 3 the hem and the band and 3 the top. The width is 145 stitches, about 80.5 cm, to hang flat; for a lightly gathered curtain, make it a quarter wider. The box below works out the chain, the rows and the yarn for your own window. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.
Your window’s curtain
Example: the 80 cm window above with a 45 cm drop, at 6 squares and 9 rows per 10 cm. Type your own window and swatch over it.
- Chain 149: 48 squares, 145 stitches across, about 80.5 cm.
- Rows 1–3: the hem and the band of blocks. Rows 4–37: plain mesh, 34 rows.
- Rows 38–43: the solid top, 145 double crochets a row; fold the last 3 back into a rod pocket about 6.5 cm round. 40 rows show, about 44.5 cm.
- Yarn: about 195 m.
Count the squares and rows in 10 cm of your washed mesh swatch. For a lightly gathered curtain, type a width a quarter wider than the window.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternHem and band
- Chain 149. Row 1: double crochet in the 8th chain from the hook, then [chain 2, skip the next 2 chains, double crochet in the next chain] 47 times: 48 open squares, or spaces.
- Row 2: chain 3 and turn (it counts as the first double crochet). [2 double crochets in the next space and 1 in the next double crochet: a block; chain 2 and double crochet in the next double crochet: a space] 24 times, working the last double crochet in the turning chain: 24 blocks and 24 spaces.
- Row 3: chain 3 and turn. [2 double crochets in the next space and 1 in the next double crochet: a block; chain 2, skip the next 2 double crochets and double crochet in the next: a space] 24 times. The blocks now sit over the spaces, like a checkerboard.
Mesh
- Rows 4–37: chain 5 and turn (it counts as a double crochet and 2 chains). Skip the next 2 stitches and double crochet in the next double crochet, then [chain 2, skip the next 2 stitches, double crochet in the next double crochet] across, working the last double crochet in the turning chain: 48 spaces. Over a block, the 2 stitches you skip are double crochets; over a space, they are chains.
- Hold the curtain up to the window now and then: before the top, it should end about 3.5 cm short of the drop you want, which the top’s visible rows add.
Top and rod pocket
- Row 38: chain 3 and turn. [2 double crochets in the next space and 1 in the next double crochet] 48 times: 145 double crochets.
- Rows 39–43: chain 3 and turn (it counts as a double crochet), double crochet in each stitch across: 145 stitches. Fasten off, leaving a tail about 2.5 m long.
- Fold the last 3 rows to the back and whipstitch the top of Row 43 to the top of Row 37, the last mesh row, with the tail. The 6 solid rows make a tube about 6.5 cm round, for a rod up to about 1.5 cm thick.
- Wash the curtain, roll it in a towel to take out the water, and slide it onto the rod while it is still damp. Pull the hem straight and the sides square and let it dry where it hangs: the mesh dries in the shape it is given.
Check the work
Every row is 145 stitches wide: 49 double crochets and 96 chains in a mesh row, 24 blocks of 3 double crochets and 24 spaces in the band, and 145 double crochets in each solid row. 43 rows in all, of which 40 show.
- If the curtain slants, a square has been gained or lost at an edge: count the spaces at the end of every row.
- If the squares come out tall and narrow, the chains are tight: work the chains a little looser, not the double crochets.
- If the rod will not go through, unpick the pocket seam and sew it one row lower.
