Chain 2, then build each stitch from the bottom up: the base chain first, the single crochet on top of it.

Make a new base, then finish the stitch

Each foundation stitch makes its own base loop; the next stitch goes into that base.

Make the first foundation stitch

  1. Chain 2. Insert the hook under 2 strands of the first chain made. Yarn over and pull up a loop: 2 loops.
  2. Yarn over and draw through only the first loop. This makes the base chain; 2 loops remain on the hook. Mark the new base chain.
  3. Yarn over and draw through both loops. The first foundation single crochet is complete.

Add the next stitch

  1. Rotate the strip enough to see the marked base chain. Insert under its 2 strands.
  2. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through just the first loop to make the next base chain.
  3. Yarn over and pull through both loops to finish the single crochet. Move the marker into the new base chain. Repeat until you have the required number of stitch tops.

Check the bottom edge

Each repetition adds one base chain and one single-crochet top. Make 10 repetitions to obtain 10 foundation single crochets, then chain 1 and turn for 10 ordinary single crochets.

If the base looks pinched, the chain-making pull-through may be too tight. If the strip turns into ordinary chains, you may be pulling through both loops before making the base. A foundation row is a construction choice; it is not an automatic replacement for a pattern whose first row contains shaping or spaces.
