Chain 3, then make each stitch’s base chain first: one pull-through, with 3 loops left on the hook.
Before you start: Double crochet
Make a new base, then finish the stitch
Make the first double crochet and its base
- Chain 3. Yarn over and insert under 2 strands of the first chain made. Yarn over and draw up a loop: 3 loops.
- Yarn over and pull through only the first loop to make the base chain. Keep 3 loops on the hook. Mark that base chain.
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, then yarn over and pull through the final 2 loops. The first foundation double crochet is complete. In this exercise the initial chains do not count as an extra stitch.
Repeat along the growing edge
- Yarn over and insert under the 2 strands of the marked base chain. Draw up a loop.
- Make the next base chain by pulling yarn through only the first loop. Then finish the double crochet in 2 stages.
- Move the marker to the new base chain and repeat. Count 10 completed double-crochet tops for a 10-stitch practice strip.
Turn and check
Chain 2 and turn for this exercise, without counting those chains. Double crochet in the first stitch and each stitch across: 10 stitches.
If there is an extra stitch at the starting end, check whether you counted the initial chains as well as the first foundation stitch. If the bottom is much tighter than the top, loosen only the base-chain step before changing the entire stitch height.
