Know these stitches: granny square, slip stitch
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.
Finished size and gauge
Measure the side of one washed square. The mat is approximately 2 square-widths across and 2 square-widths long before any seam allowance. Measure the actual joins; do not assume they add no width.
The shape of the granny square mat.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternMake matching squares
- Follow the three-round granny-square lesson linked below. Use US double crochet and count the beginning chain 3 as one double crochet in its group.
- Round 1 has 12 double crochets and 4 corner spaces. Round 2 has 24 double crochets. Round 3 has 36 double crochets. Keep all 4 corners on every round.
- Make 4 squares. Fasten off each one and weave its ends through the backs of stitches in changing directions. Wash and dry each square by the yarn label.
Arrange and join
- Lay the squares in 2 rows of 2, with the same face upward. Mark the corners that meet in the center.
- Sew the first pair along matching edge loops using the flat-seam instructions. Join the second pair in the same way.
- Align the two strips and sew the remaining seam. Match the central junction first, then work toward the outer edges.
- Weave the joining tails. Lay the mat flat and inspect both sides before using it. This mat is not a heat-protective trivet.
Check the work
Every seam joins matching edge counts. At the center, 4 corner spaces meet without one square being stretched.
- If a corner lifts, loosen the nearby sewing yarn and compare the square sizes.
- If an edge has a different count, repair that square before adding a border.
