How to crochet loop stitch: loops for fur, rugs and trims

Wrap the yarn around your finger to make a loop, insert the hook and pull both strands behind the finger through, then finish like a single crochet. The loops stand out on the side away from you, so work loop rows on wrong-side rows.

What it looks like Rows of loops standing out from a single-crochet ground, like fur.

Make one loop stitch

  1. Insert the hook into the next stitch.
  2. Wrap the working yarn from front to back around the index finger of your yarn hand, to the length you want the loop.
  3. With the hook, catch both strands of yarn behind your finger and pull them through the stitch: three loops are on the hook.
  4. Yarn over and draw through all three loops. Slip your finger out of the loop.

Practice in rows

Chain 16 and work a row of single crochet. Turn, and work a row of loop stitch into every stitch: this is a wrong-side row, and the loops fall to the right side. Turn and work a row of plain single crochet to lock the loops, then repeat the two rows.

Keep the loops even by wrapping them around the same finger, or around a ruler or a strip of card for longer loops.

Use it in

Fur and hair on toys, a fluffy cat or a lion’s mane; bath mats and rugs; collars and trims. Cut the loops for a shaggy pile.
