How to crochet houndstooth stitch: sc and dc in two colors

Alternate a single crochet and a double crochet across the row, and change color every row. Each row puts a double crochet into every single crochet below and a single crochet into every double crochet, so the two colors lock into a small jagged check.

What it looks like Two colors that lock into a small jagged check: each row’s tall stitches reach into the row below.

Make the rows

  1. Foundation: with color A, chain an even number, plus 1. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook, double crochet in the next chain; repeat [single crochet, double crochet] to the end.
  2. Change to color B on the last pull-through of the row: work the final double crochet until 2 loops remain, then draw color B through them. Cut color A, leaving a 10 cm tail.
  3. Chain 1 and turn; it does not count. Single crochet in the first double crochet, double crochet in the next single crochet; repeat across. Change back to color A on the last pull-through.
  4. Repeat that row, changing color at the end of every row. With two colors and turned rows, the color you need next is always at the other edge, so cut and join at each row end.

Try a practice strip

Chain 21 in color A: work [sc, dc] 10 times for 20 stitches. Work 10 rows, changing color every row. Count 20 stitches in each row: 10 single and 10 double crochets.

The check shows once 4 or 5 rows are done. If a row looks like plain stripes, look at the row below: a single crochet belongs on top of every double crochet.

The ends

Every row leaves two tails at the edges. Weave them into the side, or leave them and crochet a border over them, catching the tails inside the border stitches as you go.

Use it in

Cowls, scarves, cushion covers and bags, where the two-color check is the point. It is the same stitch as griddle stitch, so it makes the same firm, flat fabric. Choose two colors with a clear difference in lightness so the check reads from a distance.
