Herringbone half double crochet: a slanted, woven look

Work a half double crochet, but pull the new loop straight through the yarn over as well as the stitch, then finish with a yarn over through both loops. The stitches lean and nest into a herringbone texture.

2 loops on the hook

Step 1 Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch.

  1. 2 loops on the hook
Step 1 Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch.
  2. 13 loops on the hook
Step 2 Yarn over and pull up a loop, and draw it straight on through the first loop on the hook (the yarn over): two loops remain.
  3. 122 loops on the hook + yarn over
Step 3 Yarn over and draw through both loops. One herringbone half double crochet is complete.

Try a practice strip

Chain 16. Work a herringbone hdc in the third chain from the hook and each chain across: 14 stitches. Chain 2 and turn; it does not count. Work 14 herringbone hdc each row.

The fabric leans: rows slant in alternate directions and nest together. It is a little shorter and denser than ordinary half double crochet, so check your gauge.

Use it in

A simple scarf or cowl that looks woven: use herringbone hdc wherever the pattern says half double crochet, after checking the stitch gauge.
