Elongated single crochet (esc): a taller, softer sc

An elongated (or extended) single crochet adds one extra pull-through: insert, pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop, then yarn over and draw through both. It is taller and softer than single crochet.

2 loops on the hook

Step 1 Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop: two loops are on the hook.

  2. 12 loops on the hook + yarn over
Step 2 Yarn over and draw through one loop only: two loops remain.

What it looks like Like single crochet, a little taller and softer.
Make the stitch

Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop: two loops are on the hook.

US / UK US esc = UK extended double crochetAny number of stitches.

Before you start: Single crochet

Make one esc

  1. Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop: two loops are on the hook.
  2. Yarn over and draw through one loop only: two loops remain.
  3. Yarn over and draw through both loops.

Try a practice strip

Chain 16. Work an esc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 15 stitches. Chain 1 and turn; it does not count. Work 15 esc in every row.

The rows are a little taller than single crochet and the fabric drapes more, so recheck your gauge before changing a pattern’s stitch.

Use it in

A softer scarf, a baby blanket or a cowl. It is a good next step after single crochet because the motion is almost the same.
